Dermot O'Leary: We may need to build right kind of homes to fix housing market

Policymakers need to start thinking about housebuilding once again

It may not be in the same league as the manias and crashes like the South Sea Company in the 1770s or the internet stocks in the early 2000s but in housing market terms, the scale of the rise in prices and the subsequent falls puts Ireland's recent housing cycle in the infamous category.

While history tells us that bust usually follows boom, it also tells us that busts usually come to an end too. This is the nature of cycles. What is up for debate is the duration and extent of them.
