Declan Lynch: Their work done, Ken and Co take leap into legend

Eventually, what has largely been a labour of love must become something else.

OF COURSE, it may all turn out fine in the end. The Off The Ball team of Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early, Ciaran Murphy, Simon Hick and Conor Horgan had perhaps reached that stage of their lives when they had to make a major move in some direction – with or without Newstalk.

It happens to people in many walks of life, from football management to cheese-mongering, that something which has largely been a labour of love must eventually become something else. And that usually means something bigger. Since Off The Ball had been universally praised and had won every available award many times, in its original form it could hardly get much better.

The NME writer Julie Burchill defined the moment when it was time to leave that magazine – it's when you're on the road with Thin Lizzy for the third time.
