Declan Lynch: The only time silly money makes sense

'FOOTBALL. F***ing football. Imagine not being into it. Those poor, poor half-alive bastards." This was the emotional tweet of the great broadcaster Danny Baker, reflecting on the last day of the Premier League, and on the game in general.

We have felt this too on those wonderful Champions League nights, when the multitudes all across this battered old continent are enthralled by the truly rare sight of the "European stage" full of men who are richly talented doing things that lift our hearts and that actually make Europe seem like quite a decent idea after all.

There is an echo here too of Woody Allen, another dedicated sports fan, who has always maintained that he is attracted to sport by the honesty of it, the way that it does away with all the hokum of showbusiness and of life itself.
