Declan Lynch: The mystical game of golf has found its spiritual home
Our true native genius is expressed, not in hurling or in Gaelic games of any kind, but on the greens, writes Declan Lynch
It can take a while for us to acknowledge the truth about ourselves. A few thousand years usually, is what it takes. And even then we remain emotionally attached to the untruth.
We would like to think that our national sport is hurling, for example, when in fact our true native genius is expressed, not in hurling or in Gaelic games of any kind, but in golf.
Finally, after the usual few thousand years, the presence last week at the Irish Open in Killarney of four Major champions from this island seemed to dissolve some of our denial in this regard -- like I said, it takes a lot.
