Decay slows but danger still lurks

Higher taxes from those who can afford to pay will be necessary to protect the vulnerable, writes James Fitzsimons

With less than six months to go before the Budget, we already know what to expect. The Government is seeking another €2.25bn cut in spending and €1.25bn extra in tax. If employment was on the increase there might be some hope, but it's inevitable that it is going to cause more pain and suffering for those who can least afford it.

We are better placed than many around the world to take advantage of the recovery when it comes. But there is nothing there yet.
