Dearbhail McDonald: Fiddling with crime figures while bankers burn us all

Criminologists always advise that crime statistics should be treated with caution: issues such as fluctuations in population including net immigration and emigration as well as the classification and recording/under-recording of crime, can widely distort figures and thwart trends.

The ink was barely dry on the CSO press release when Fine Gael declared a new moral panic, something about Ireland being far more dangerous after 13 years of Fianna Fail in power.

Let's have a closer look at what the party's justice spokesman, Charlie Flanagan said. "Ireland is clearly a far more dangerous place than when Fine Gael left government. With robberies against the person soaring, people are right to be nervous on the streets. Fianna Fail's repeated pledges to clamp down on crime have rung hollow for many years now.
