Dearbhail McDonald: Blame the State for costs, not lawyers
IT is easy for politicians to point the finger at tribunal lawyers for the fees they have earned. It is much harder for them to accept that the responsibility for the cost lies at their front door.
Tribunals are creatures spawned, in the main, by and in response to political scandals. Gold-circle lawyers charge gold-circle fees.
But it is governments that have consistently agreed massive daily rates for tribunal lawyers to tempt the brightest and the best away from their lucrative practices.
