David Quinn: Yes, the Pope is Catholic – and he did his utmost under junta

Pope Francis is making a fantastic impression so far, but there are two lines of attack on him that have already opened up. The first, bizarrely, amounts to a charge that the Pope is a Catholic, and specifically that he is pro-life, and pro-traditional marriage.

The second, more serious one is that he was silent in the face of Argentina's vile military dictatorship, which ruled from 1976 until 1983, or worse, that he actively collaborated with it.

Feminist commentators have been especially critical about the fact that the Pope is, in fact, a Catholic. In particular, they attack the church's 'dogmatism' over women priests.
