Barack Obama looks set to take a pasting in next month's mid-term elections in the US. His party's majority in the Senate will be slashed, and the Democrats could lose control of the House. This will hugely set back his agenda.

How has it come to pass that the man who could walk on water is now struggling to stay above the surface, while his party is sinking beneath the waves? The answer is that Americans don't like huge government spending and that is what Barack Obama has unleashed.

The massive increase in government spending (a stimulus that didn't stimulate) has created a major backlash in the form of the so-called 'Tea Party' movement.
