Daniel McConnell: Time running out for Labour salvation

Party members reveal concerns amid drop in support and mixed fortunes in Government, writes Daniel McConnell

For those close to Eamon Gilmore, Friday's referendum result is the continuation of a "stellar electoral performance under his leadership".

They point to a historic success in the general election, where they won 37 seats; the presidential election, where their candidate Michael D Higgins won out; a by-election victory on the same day; as well as their part in the referendum's passing.

But this is not an accurate reflection of a shaky election campaign and its mixed fortunes in Government, which has seen its party support rating almost halve in the 15 months since the general election.
