Dan O'Brien: Blizzard of figures being thrown at us makes for good 2014
The past week has brought a veritable slew of data on the economy. It also saw a very successful sale of government bonds. With hopes of a sustained recovery stronger than at any time since the crash, what do the bond sale and the blizzard of figures published over the past seven days tell us about the prospects of better times ahead?
The heavily oversubscribed bond issue on Tuesday adds to the momentum towards the State's regaining of full and normal market access. That in turn reduces the probability of a second bailout over the next 12-24 months. This is excellent news.
How Ireland is perceived abroad has clearly changed for the better. And perceptions matter, particularly for small countries because the depth of knowledge about them internationally is shallow.
