In the continuing absence of certainty over exactly when Taoiseach Enda Kenny will step down, there's a 'phoney war' between the main contenders to succeed him.

The gun can't be fired on the leadership contest proper.

Leo Varadkar and Simon Coveney will want to tread carefully in any efforts to garner support for the battle that will come.
