Consumers will have to foot bill for future improvements in creaking system
THIS is probably the last time that customers will benefit from upgrades to the water network without having to pay directly through household charges.
The Government plans to invest more than €900m over the next three years upgrading the network, and the expenditure could be seen as the last grant it makes available to provide safe drinking water and waste water treatment.
But that will change very quickly. Irish Water plans to borrow €210m to fund further works, and the cost of servicing those loans will be added to bills.
