Colum Kenny: Senators must up their game to save second chamber
More radical proposals are needed urgently or the Seanad will be confined to history
An official reprimanded the man behind me in the public gallery of the Seanad for using a mobile phone on silent last week. Meanwhile, a few metres away, on the floor of the Seanad, two senators were using mobiles.
And when I very quietly asked the man what the official had said, the official returned and ordered me in no uncertain terms not to talk. Meanwhile, as one senator made a speech, four other senators were conversing nearby.
It's not just when it comes to having a private bar at work that members of the Oireachtas live in a parallel universe.
