Carol Hunt: Don't risk your career for your conscience
Lucinda Creighton is an excellent politician, regardless of her views on abortion
'DON'T see a great election wasted. Vote sensibly,' was the tag line on a beer mat in 2007. It was courtesy of wannabe TD Lucinda Creighton, who subsequently went on to become the baby of the Dail that year. She seemed a sensible and appropriate choice for leafy, liberal Dublin South East.
On the evening of the election count I watched her as she was surrounded by well-wishers and family, ecstatic that she had nabbed herself a seat in the 30th Dail. I recall nudging the friend beside me and commenting, "We need more like her"; bright, smart, modern young women who didn't owe their political seats to 'Daddy' but to their own hard work, commitment and smarts.
Six years on and Creighton has just completed a gruelling six months as Minister of State for European Affairs during Ireland's presidency of the EU.
