Caitriona Palmer: Liberal Obama has turned into Big Brother
AS an earnest presidential candidate in 2007 Barack Obama denounced the "colour-coded politics of fear" of the Bush era and vowed to "close Guantanamo, reject the Military Commissions Act and adhere to the Geneva Conventions".
The message was clear. Change was coming to Washington and the secretive policies of the Bush era were on borrowed time. There would be "no more illegal wire-tapping of American citizens", said Obama, "no more national-security letters to spy on citizens who are not suspected of a crime" and "no more ignoring the law when it is inconvenient."
What a difference five years makes.
