Budget is last chance to make a difference
The public sector must be tackled if we are to meet the IMF's targets on cutting our deficit, writes Daniel McConnell
The Cabinet is to meet for the first time after the summer break on Tuesday morning, and all eyes will be on Michael Noonan and Brendan Howlin as they begin the process of slashing and burning all around them.
Since the new Government assumed office on March 9, we have been waiting eagerly to see the change much promised by them during the election campaign. So far, there has been little or no sign of that grand reform.
Now, with the summer at an end, we are entering into a crucial few months for this country. The time has come for this Government to show its mettle once and for all. Between now and budget day, a series of key events are to take place that will determine Ireland's future.
