Bruce Arnold: A sad lack of pretenders willing to topple FF loser
GETTING a new political party started in Ireland has grown more difficult. The need for it has grown more obvious and more urgent. This has been reinforced in recent days by several events.
The first is Fianna Fail's endorsement, without objection, of Brian Cowen to lead the party into the next general election. Have party members abandoned their brains altogether? Don't they remember Charlie McCreevy challenging Charles Haughey? They needed a McCreevy this week.
Cowen, the born loser whose trail of mistakes lies thick on the ground behind him, will still be kept by Fianna Fail as its flawed but irremovable mascot.
