Brian Brennan: Political circus is over, so let's get our eye back on the economic ball
We might easily have seen history in the making this week, with the emergence of a newly invigorated opposition capable of challenging the Government's sluggish economic efforts at recovery. The new-look Fine Gael would put forward bright and practical proposals on how the spill in the public finances might be capped.
But no, the face of Fine Gael remains the same and, as Brian Cowen stated discouragingly when wishing Enda Kenny well yesterday, the pair of them will continue next week where they left off.
Or there might have been a historic vote of no confidence in a Taoiseach who stubbornly refuses to accept the conclusions of two independent reports that, as former Finance Minister, he bears deep responsibility for the severity of the country's economic woes.
