Brendan O'Connor: Well, another fine mess for our 'Volatiley Reilly'
We had thought that this crowd might be a bit more polished, but the shine is going off them very quickly, writes Brendan O'Connor
WHAT made many of us sit up and take notice was when Micheal Martin said in the Dail on Wednesday, almost matter of factly, that: "We have a volatile minister, and senior personnel have left the health service because of his behaviour and the manner in which he deals with people."
It was a fairly extraordinary statement to make. It was something most of us would not have been aware of, even if it is true. And then suddenly, it seemed that everyone was taking for granted that of course it was true. It was as if we were all supposed to have known all along that James Reilly is volatile and has bad bedside manners. We suddenly found ourselves waking up and realising that this is clearly the word on Minister Reilly among those in the know. Suddenly Cathal Magee was around basically denying, a bit unconvincingly, that his leaving the HSE was anything to do with Volatiley Reilly's manner. There were tensions and difficulties
