Boost for Obama as president to confirm deal on St Patrick's Day

PEOPLE love to hate Ryanair, but few deny that it has utterly transformed air travel in Europe. It opened up parts of Europe that otherwise seemed destined to remain backwaters.

Along the way, it has always had a fractious relationship with both the Irish governments of the day and the European Commission.

Michael O'Leary's failed efforts to buy Aer Lingus will also be remembered as a misstep for the carrier. The UK's Competition Commission could tell Ryanair within weeks that it has to sell its 29.8pc Aer Lingus stake following a probe, even as Ryanair appeals the latest EU decision to block its efforts to buy the former flag carrier.
