Bertie Ahern doesn't think much of Micheal Martin's leadership of Fianna Fail. The man who likes to see himself as the ultimate Dub says that under his Cork successor the party is "doing fairly brutal".

That remark tells you a lot about Ahern and perhaps a little about Martin, but nothing at all about the state of the party.

In point of fact, under its present leader Fianna Fail is doing fairly well. It ranks as equal with Fine Gael in the opinion polls. Who could have foreseen that recovery three years ago, when it suffered its most devastating, and most thoroughly deserved, general election defeat?
