AS IRELAND sinks slowly beneath the icy waves of the recession, it is hard to believe that we weren't always an island of the damned on the edge of northern Europe.
Our fortunes were once so healthy that some of Irish society's grandees cruised along the warm waters of the Riviera on Aristotle Onassis's yacht, the Christina O, for a week of joie de vivre and pink Louis Roederer.
It was the sail of the century. It was, also, lest we forget, the wedding celebration in July 2004 of Gayle Killilea to property tycoon Sean Dunne, costing an estimated €1.5m.
