Average pay for 1,800 staff topped €106,000

STAFF at Anglo Irish Bank routinely topped the pay league of Irish-quoted companies as the group's loan book soared multi-fold in the decade of runaway property prices.

Average pay packages among staff topped €106,000 in 2008, including share schemes and pension contributions, making them by far the best paid in the sector -- even as the bank's business model began to unravel.

It has to be said, however, that many junior staff struggled on miserable salaries for years, as they sought to get ahead in a bank that was imbued like no other with a can-do, will-do attitude.
