Are you right there, Ireland? A call for fresh thinking
Healthy debate demands that we have a balance between right and left, writes Marc Coleman
THIS is not an economics article, but an overdue call to civic debate. It ends not with a conclusion, but an invitation -- to you -- to join in that debate.
Last week the thought struck me that Fine Gael should change its name to the Vuvuzela Party. At a time when we need to focus on our national game, we witnessed the hypnotic distracting drone of a leadership fight. A fight, moreover, in which not one serious issue, policy or set of values featured.
But what really matters is not whether Enda Kenny or Richard Bruton leads the next government. What matters is whether that government is going to tackle the massive challenge of State spending that is growing out of control, and the crushing burden of a semi-state and banking sector that is strangling free enterprise.
