Aodhan O Riordain: Subsidies for private schools are just funding social barriers
WHEN it comes to the debate on state subsidies to private schools it is very easy to be irresponsible. It is easy to argue that we should continue to reinforce inequality by maintaining a subsidy that indisputably benefits schools that exclude children based on the income of their parents.
Mirroring this, it is easy to be irresponsible and say that we should end this subsidy overnight, something that is simply not possible.
The reality is that we need to engage in widespread reform of the education sector, including a winding down of state subsidies for private education.
