Alison O’Connor: It was naive to appoint Savage as head of RTE

Alison O’Connor

There is no shortage of people now wondering if Tom Savage, chairman of RTE, should resign. Back in 2009, I wondered whether he should have been appointed in the first place.

Mr Savage is a very capable and talented man. In fact, well over a decade ago when I worked for another newspaper, a group of us were sent to the then Carr Communications, run by Mr Savage and his wife Terry Prone, for a training course. If I remember correctly we had Tom the first day and Terry on the second.

Both were excellent. They did a really good job in training people in broadcasting skills. Afterwards they said that, as part of the course, if anyone had a big job interview or maybe a book being published, we could come back for a one-on-one session.
