Alison O’Connor: Forget gender quotas, we need more Brigids in Dail
Brigid Hogan- O'Higgins remembers well the letter from the Ceann Comhairle telling her that the only ladies' toilet in Leinster House was going to be closed for three months in order for a shower to be installed.
The Galway South TD turned over the note concerning the planned temporary closure of the solitary cloakroom and she wrote: "Dear Ceann Comhairle, we are not hens."
As she tells it, the building work was postponed and up until her retirement as a TD in 1977 no shower had been installed. That was just one of the many wonderful vignettes told by Mrs Hogan-O'Higgins (80) last Friday night in Ballinasloe, Co Galway.
