Alan O'Keeffe: Taxpayers need clarity on where money is flowing

THE new row over the tens of millions of euro channelled to consultants by Irish Water is just the latest headache in the setting up of the fledgling state utility body.

The Irish public were forced to swallow the concept of paying for water supplies as part of the economic bailout agreed with the troika at the end of 2010.

Irish households had enjoyed water supplies at no extra cost for generations, so the imposition of charges at the behest of mandarins at the IMF, the ECB and the EU was guaranteed to be unpopular.
