A clear snapshot of a veteran snapper
AS WELL as being a turfcutter in the Dublin mountains, Colman Doyle spent more than half a century photographing the changing Ireland for the Irish Press and Paris-Match.
From Charlie Haughey to Grace Kelly to the Battle of the Bogside, Doyle was on hand with his camera. Now his life and 60 years as a press photographer are to be featured in a documentary Colman Doyle: Abhar Machnaimh ("taking stock"), which will be broadcast next Saturday at 8pm on TG4.
"We follow Colman as he returns to west Kerry, to reconnect with the people and places he first photographed at the beginning of his professional career, over 50 years ago," say the makers. There will be slices of lost Ireland like Blasket islanders, poitin raids, cock fighting and funerals and his work as a news photographer. It promises to be well worth watching.
