Motorists have been warned a section of the M8 Dublin-Cork motorway has been closed by gardaí following a road traffic incident.
A section of the motorway between Junction 16 Rathcormac and Junction 15 Fermoy-South in north Cork was closed to facilitate the work of emergency services shortly after 2pm.
Gardaí are at the scene but no details are available as yet about the number of vehicles in the incident or any injuries involved.
Diversions are in place and Gardaí warned motorists that local delays may be experienced.
Delays have also resulted from a number of road closures throughout north Cork linked to the staging of local St Patrick's Day parades.
The M8 incident is being dealt with by Gardaí, Fermoy Fire Brigade and paramedics.
It is unclear how long the section of motorway involved will remain closed.
Southbound traffic on the motorway is unaffected.
