Irish Water has issued a conservation appeal in advance of an anticipated summer surge in demand on water supplies.

With good weather forecast, the last of the schools finishing up this week and the staycation season beginning, the utility says supplies are expected to come under increased pressure.

So far, there have been no major problems as a wet May and a slow start to the fine weather has kept most supplies at normal levels.

But a few smaller rural supplies are being watched closely and residents in Bolliver, Co Meath, have experienced some disruption.

Irish Water is asking people not to use paddling pools at home over the summer months – but the request comes as shops push water play products and as Aldi prepares to put 12ft and 14ft pools on sale in its middle aisle next weekend.

Tom Cuddy of Irish Water said every effort would be made to ensure a reliable water supply for the summer.

“We are also asking the public to take note of their water usage and conserve where possible,” he said.

Twice in the past four summers, Irish Water has had to issue drought warnings. In 2018, a hosepipe ban, which included a range of usage restrictions, was in place for much of the summer over much of the country.

Last year’s unusually warm spring and early summer brought water levels plummeting.

Similar restrictions were on the cards this year but weather conditions changed to stave off any major issues.

Mr Cuddy said the appeal applied particularly in tourist areas, but he asked everyone to play their part.

“Conserving water is something that we should be doing year-round, not just when supplies come under pressure due to drought conditions and seasonal increases in demand,” he said.
