Dear Karen,

Dear Karen,

I am pregnant and recently I noticed some yellowish vaginal discharge. Is this normal?

KAREN SAYS: This may just related to the pregnancy. Women should be informed that an increase in vaginal discharge is a common physiological change that occurs during pregnancy.

If it is associated with itch, soreness, offensive smell or pain on passing urine, there may be an infective cause and investigation should be considered. So, reader, if you have any of these problems you need to consult your GP for swabs and treatment as required.

A white vaginal discharge with associated itch is generally thrush. A one-week course of a topical antifungal is an effective treatment and should be considered for vaginal thrush infections in pregnant women. The effectiveness and safety of oral treatments for vaginal thrush in pregnancy are uncertain and these treatments should not be offered.
