According to a Joint Oireachtas report the barriers that women face boil down to the five Cs: Confidence, Childcare, Cash, Candidate Selection and Culture.
"Those are the main barriers but we're aware of a disconnect between interest and activity," says Michelle O'Donnell Keating, co-founder of Women For Election (womenforelection.ie).
Since the group's inception last year, they've taken 350 women through their Inspire programme to help women access political life. This year they'll launch Ireland's first Political Campaign School for women.
"We've found that women are interested but unsure how to get involved in political life," says Michelle.
