Romance is in the hair with coiffeur Bruton
Let me solve the mystery of why Ireland's top hairdresser was on his knees last night in Shanahan's.
It wasn't the drink – and it wasn't anything else either.
No – Alan Bruton was down on one knee in the exclusive Stephen's Green restaurant proposing to his gorgeous girlfriend, Suzy O'Connell.
Romantic? Yes. Romeo and Juliet for the over-40s actually, because if ever there were a pair of star- crossed lovers it is they.
Alan first met sexy Suzy 20 years ago at a ball in the Burlington Hotel in Dublin but, he tells me, "we were both in relationships at the time and every time I was single, she was with someone, and vice versa".
So when the planets finally aligned two years ago and Suzy and Alan were both single, Alan asked her out.
Alan, who cuts the gruaige of the likes of Mary Robinson, Alison Doody et al in his salon Reds on Dawson Street, bought the ring, a big one- stone mount, last week in top secret circumstances.
"I've got the right woman in Suzy," Alan told me, adding that they are jetting off to America in a few weeks to go sailing in Connecticut and to meet up with Alan's brother Tom.
Alan's mother Margaret was very ill late last year and he and Suzy took a small break to care for her. She died in January.
"I'm glad Suzy waited for me. She is incredible," said coiffeur Alan of his bride-to-be.
"There is no other woman like her."
A cut above the rest, clearly.
