On June 10, 2004, then Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was on Sea Island, in Georgia in the US, representing the EU as part of Ireland's presidency duties, at the G8 leaders' summit.

He took the 'smart casual attire' suggestion for a photo-call rather too literally and appeared in luminous yellow trousers and a cream jacket.

Most of the others took off their ties and opened a few shirt buttons. They included US President George W Bush, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The 'fashion police' bayed disapproval, the unkinder ones likening Bertie Ahern to a banana split. Adrian Copeland, brother and business partner of master tailor Louis, admitted they had supplied the clobber. "But not necessarily in that order," he said.
