Ever looked out at the horizon and noticed what looked like someone walking on water? Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is the latest craze taking the world by storm.

While we are not quite in Hawaii, where it originated, young and old are heading out in the masses to stand on boards, on water, and paddle for fun and fitness. Taster lessons are available nationwide, with courses and even races for those who catch the bug. Almost all sessions include wetsuits, buoyancy aid and, of course, a board and paddle.

Best €35 for 2.5 hour taster/standard lesson. Outdoor Dublin, Skerries, Co Dublin.

Avoid €45 for 2 hour introduction class. Surfdock, Grand Canal Basin, Dublin.

If you prefer to have your head in the clouds instead of down with the fishes a flying lesson may be more your style. Experience the thrill of a 30-minute helicopter flying lesson by taking the controls of a chopper high over the Irish countryside. Just don't forget your camera to capture those breathtaking views.

Flights from Weston Airport, Co Kildare, Cork Airport, or Newcastle Airfield, Co Wicklow.

But maybe you fancied yourself manning something slightly bigger, while keeping your feet firmly on the ground. Pilot a Boeing 737 packed with (imaginary) passengers and land it on an (imaginary) runway in your favourite holiday resort, from Innsbruck in the snowy Austrian Alps to a buzzing city or quaint Caribbean island. Flight simulators are said to give budding pilots the authentic but challenging feeling of flying a jet while remaining in Shannon, Co Clare.

Tradesmen might be seeing a spike in business this year with households cashing in on home improvement incentives, but the bills still have to be paid. Van insurance is one of the must haves for a 39-year-old plasterer from Fethard-on-Sea in Co Wexford. He has a full Irish driving licence, with more than nine years' experience and no penalty points. He also has a five-year no claims discount. But what are the quotes for comprehensive cover, no bonus protection, in a 2003 reg Isuzu Trooper Commercial 4x4?

Best €322.79. Cover centre via Chill Insurance

Avoid €458.80. Liberty Insurance via Chill

Renting out your second home can have its headaches before you even consider filling it with tenants. Landlords need to have insurance to cover any damage to the building or its contents caused by everything from an unruly tenant to an accidental blaze. Cover for a detached house in Drumnavagh Close in Cavan, built in 2000, to include the building insured to the sum of €160,000 and contents of €16,000 will be:
