Madge beats Macca

Madonna was the only female performer to make the top five of the list of most-played artists of the past decade.

The Beatles confirmed their enduring appeal, taking second spot in the BBC survey.

Third-placed Robbie Williams came ahead of his former bandmates Take That, who finished fifth behind Queen.

ABBA just made it into the top 10 (rated ninth, ahead of Coldplay) with the survey compilers pointing to the massive success of the Mamma Mia! stage musical and film as a factor in the Swedish supergroup's enduring popularity.

There were some surprises, girl-group franchise Sugababes (who now have no original members) were placed ahead of both Elton John and Elvis Presley.

An earlier chart also revealed a surprising result for the most played pop recording of the past 75 years -- Procol Harum's '60s classic 'A Whiter Shade of Pale'.
