About 500 Irish women have put their names on a waiting list at the newly opened Hermes store in Brown Thomas, Grafton Street, Dublin, for the coveted leather bags.

With a minimum price tag of ?4,000, the shoppers might have to wait up to five years for the privilege of swinging one. And even then, securing the store's trademark Kelly or Birkin bag is not guaranteed.

A simple leather Birkin, designed for the English actress Jane Birkin, starts at ?5,110, increasing in price depending on the material used and the grade of the leather.

Crocodile-skin versions are the most expensive and if diamonds are incorporated in the design, prices can sky-rocket to ?50,000.

"A couple" of customers at the Hermes store have requested the Plume, a crocodile-skin bag that starts at ?12,800.

The Kelly bag, made famous by Princess Grace Kelly and described as the Rolls Royce of handbags, starts at ?4,000 for the 'basic' model, while an ostrich version, made from the skin of hand-reared South African birds, costs ?9,300.

Victoria Beckham owns the Ostrich bag and at least two other Birkin bags - one white and one lime green, which she uses to conceal her pregnant tummy from prying cameras.

A Hermes spokesperson said they were "overwhelmed" by the demand for the bags amongst fashionable Irish women.
