Beach bag essentials

I ALWAYS fall for it. You know – the promise that a few days of R&R in the sun will leave me feeling rejuvenated and looking nothing less than fabulous . . .

Although I'm careful with my SPF, love hanging out under a very large umbrella guaranteed to keep me safe from the sun's scary rays and can't resist rehydrating as much as possible with those sunshine-packed fruit drinks, I still end up looking hot and bothered, blotchy and tired, dry and yet somehow sweaty at the same time.

It's definitely not the beach-babe look I'd been hoping for. More like strung out and slovenly. Sigh . . . Thankfully you don't have to suffer like me.

Here are a few tips to deal with bites, blisters and the bugbear of parched skin.

Darphin Chamomile Aromatic Care, €49

After just one or two days in the sun, my complexion can appear quite blotchy. This clarifying plant-based oil can help to even it out. Massage it into your skin every evening and continue the habit when you get home. I find that its calming aroma helps me sleep better.

Cowshed Udderly Gorgeous Leg & Foot Treatment, €24.50

If you've spent a long day checking out the hottest sights, tired legs and achy feet will definitely appreciate a massage with this lotion, which is chock-full of invigorating sea-buckthorn. It smells great, too.

Compeed Blister Patches, €7.02

Hot weather + new footwear = ugly blisters. These protective patches have a gel to sooth the pain and provide a barrier against the sand and sea.

Clarins After Sun Moisturizer Self Tanning, €25.50

With an ingredient list that includes sunflower extract, watermelon and shea butter, this soothing rehydrating cream definitely gives tired and dry skin a replenishing boost. And it contains just enough self-tanner to give your skin a lovely shimmer.

Body Shop Hemp Moisture High Balm, €9.95

This multi-purpose balm can be used on both face and body and it's great for hydrating thirsty, sun-exposed skin, especially on particularly dry patches around knees, elbows and heels. It has a slightly greasy texture so don't use too much. The small pot won't take up too much space in your beach bag.

Tisserand Skin Soothing Roller Ball, €6.50

Make sure to pop this natural antiseptic roll-on into your bag, along with your tickets, money and passport. It's just as essential! The key ingredients of calming camomile and lavender combined with easy application equal fast relief from itchy red bites.

Decleor High Repair After-Sun Balm for Face, €33.50

Nourishing and natural, this rescue ointment works wonders on parched and reddened skin. After cleansing, warm a small amount in your hands and gently massage it on to your face and neck. Use at night-time to give your complexion time to regenerate itself after too much sun exposure.
