Dog's Bay, Connemara: Just a couple of kilometres from the village of Roundstone on the Ballyconneely Peninsula you'll find two of the sweetest beaches on the Wild Atlantic way lying back to back. Both Dog's Bay and Gurteen Bay are good for walking and swimming, but it's the snow-white sands of the former that do it for us.

TripAdvisor has published its annual list of Ireland's best beaches, with a new No.1 for the first time in four years.

Banna Strand, near Tralee, Co. Kerry, has been named Ireland's top beach in the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards for 2017.

Inchydoney, Co. Cork, which had topped TripAdvisor's best beaches list for three years running and was voted Ireland's Favourite Beach in our Reader Travel Awards 2017, has this year dropped to the No.2 spot.

Once again, the southwest dominates - the full list is as follows (see gallery above):

  1. Banna Strand, Co. Kerry
  2. Inchydoney, Co. Cork
  3. Derrynane, Co. Kerry
  4. Inch Beach, Co. Kerry
  5. Strandhill, Co. Sligo
  6. Coumeenoole, Co. Kerry
  7. Barleycove, Co. Cork
  8. Curracloe, Co. Wexford
  9. Narin Beach, Portnoo, Co. Donegal
  10. Dog's Bay, Connemara

Travellers’ Choice award-winners are determined based on traveller reviews gathered over a 12-month period, TripAdvisor says.

Surprisingly perhaps, there are no beaches from counties Mayo, Clare or Waterford on its 2017 list... not to mention Wicklow, Dublin, Meath or Louth.

In the world ranking, Brazil's Baia do Sancho topped the poll, with Grace Bay in the Caribbean's Turks and Caicos placing second.

La Concha in San Sebastian, Spain, was voted Europe's best beach, followed by Elafonissi Beach in Elafonissi, Crete.
