WATCH: Dramatic dolphin rescue on Achill Island after locals raise alarm on social media
A dramatic rescue unfolded on one of the Wild Atlantic Way's most famous beaches (see video) this week.
Around noon on Tuesday, Achil Islander Joel Henry spotted five dolphins beached in the spectacular setting of Keem Bay.
After raising the alarm on social media, he was joined by another local man, Tommy English, who shared footage of the dying dolphins on Facebook.
Within minutes of his video being uploaded, enough people had made their way to the beach to mount a rescue attempt.
Despite the rough seas, David McNamara and Saoirse Kennedy led the successful rescue. Four out of five dolphins were saved.
The final dolphin sadly died on the sands, although the other animals tried several times to come back to the beach to its aid.
