WATCH: Amazing amateur video shows what Dublin was like in 1960

Michael Rogge

In 1960, Dutchman Michael Rogge travelled to Dublin. His gorgeous, 16mm footage captures a very different city.

66 years ago, Seán Lemass was Taoiseach.

Chubby Checker released 'The Twist', and Elvis Presley returned from Germany to croon 'Are You Lonesome Tonight?'

On Dublin's O'Connell Street, Nelson's Pillar stood tall (it would remain there until blown up by the IRA in 1966), and horses still mixed with the traffic.

Overseas, JFK and Nelson battled it out in the 1960 US Presidential election, and nine Irish soldiers lost their lives in the Congo.

At home, Bono, Brian Cowan and Miriam O'Callaghan were born.

Thanks for the memories, Michael!
