Pól Ó Conghaile: Christmas gift ideas for the savvy traveller in your life
Travel Insider - stocking fillers
Ireland's Travel Journalist of the Year says stocking fillers for travel fans don't have to cost the earth...
This is the weekend that Christmas really kicks in for me.
Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, with Santa lists under construction and markets sparking to life around the continent, it's no longer possible to keep your head in the sand. The juggernaut is coming.
Luckily, there are lots of gifts out there for travel fans, and they don't have to involve shelling out on an entire trip. How? Vouchers, that's how.
Did you know Ryanair and Aer Lingus do flight vouchers from €25? Gift vouchers with irelandhotels.com also start at €25, giving recipients the pick of 700 hotels and guesthouses around the country.
Travel Department (traveldepartment.ie) and Abbey Travel (abbeytravel.ie) are among the tour operators doing vouchers, while Flynn Hotels (flynnhotels.com) has a 48-hour sale running to midnight tonight (Saturday, November 28) with rooms from €69.
That's not even starting on the accessories.
Passport covers, luggage scales, travel adaptors, Moleskine notebooks and (if you're really stuck) selfie sticks all fit snugly into a savvy traveller's stocking.
One more thing. If you want to get away for Christmas entirely, check out our Top 10 Christmas Escapes here. From winter sun in the Canaries to ski holidays in the French Alps, we've got the perfect excuse to fly away for the festive season.
Ireland's Blue Book launched its 2016 edition this week, with new members including the Killarney Royal, No.1 Pery Square in Limerick and Viewmount House in Longford. Vouchers start from €100 (irelands-blue-book.ie), and they go surprisingly far off-season. No.1 Pery Square (pictured) has B&B with a three-course dinner from €109pp, for example.
January is one of the hottest months for holiday bookings, so why not kill two birds by popping a voucher under the tree? Sunway (sunway.ie) and Tour America (touramerica.ie) do vouchers from €50, while Cassidy Travel (cassidytravel.ie) starts from €20, with city breaks from €99 in February.
NB: All prices subject to availability/change.
