Dublin Airport has welcomed Qatar Airways' announcement that it will fly daily to Doha from next summer.

The Dublin to Doha route had originally been announced by the airline last week, but a start date was not supplied at that time.

Today, Qatar Airways confirmed that the daily service will commence from June 12, 2017, and will be operated with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

"This service will bring extra choice and convenience for passengers and will also add Dublin and Ireland to Qatar’s growing global network,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director Vincent Harrison, welcoming the service.

The launch of flights to Dublin is an exciting addition to our network and I am confident that business and leisure passengers will benefit from our Boeing 787 Dreamliner service and smooth onward connections,” added Mr Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive.

The daily, 254-seater service will provide another hub for Irish passengers in the Middle East (Emirates and Etihad already fly from Dublin to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, respectively), and should also boost inbound tourism next year.

"As an island destination, the importance of convenient, direct, non-stop flights cannot be overstated," said Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, welcoming the news. "They are absolutely critical to achieving growth in inbound tourism.”

Doha's Hamad International Airport connects to more than 150 destinations including cities in South East Asia, China and Australasia.

Qatar is scheduled to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
