Tayto Park has opened for 2016, complete with added mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and cave bears.

Its brand new 'Ice Valley Experience', dotted with mighty megafauna, gives an insight into life on earth one million years ago, the Park says.

Life-sized mammals, glaciers and snow will provide the setting for a host of new creatures, including giant Irish deer and hulking ground sloths.

Tayto Park is also debuting a mini-Ferris wheel and vintage carousel this weekend, and will have a host of dinosaur experts on site to deliver educational talks.

Since opening in 2010, the Ashbourne, Co. Meath theme park has gone on to become one of Ireland's most-visited attractions, clocking 450,000 visitors in 2014 - the last year for which Fáilte Ireland figures are available.

Last June, the park added Europe’s largest wooden rollercoaster (dubbed Cú Chulainn) to a line-up that already includes a zoo, 5D cinema and Tayto factory tour.

"We have lots more up our sleeves for 2016, so keep your eyes peeled for announcements," said Tayto Park founder Raymond Coyle.

"This summer is going to be a very exciting one.”
