Readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine have voted four Irish hotels into their Top 25 Resorts in Europe.

Ashford Castle (No.5), Trump International Hotel & Golf Links in Doonbeg (20), Adare Manor (21) and Dromoland Castle (24) all make the cut.

Italy dominates the European list, with five resorts in the Top 10 - including Tuscany's Borgo Santo Pietro in top spot.

The results cap an extraordinary Irish showing in the awards, which also saw Ballyfin Demesne in Co. Laois named the world's best hotel.

"It's been surreal and overwhelming," is how Damien Bastiat, General manager at the five-star, characterised the news for Independent.ie Travel.

"When I told our managing director we had scored 99.11 points out of 100, he said what happened to the other 0.89!" he laughs. "So that's the next step!"

The Awards also saw Waterford Castle (7) and The Lodge at Ashford Castle (9) feature in the Top 10 hotels, scoring 98.60 and 98.38 respectively.

Conde Nast's Readers' Choice Awards divide hotels and larger resorts into distinct categories - hence the different properties featuring in each.

More than 300,000 readers took part in this year's Awards, it says, voting in categories ranging from destinations to hotels and cruise ships.

Results of the 2016 Awards are published in the November issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine, and online at cntraveler.com/rca.

In other categories, Dublin was named 34th best city in the world.
