Suite talk: The Wheatsheaf Inn, Cotswolds

The jewel in jump-racing's crown is nearly upon us.

If you're going to the Cheltenham Festival (March 13-16) and need a base close to the turf, The Wheatsheaf Inn, in the gorgeous village of Northleach, is just a 10-minute drive away.

Following a careful restoration, this old coaching stop re-opened last year as a five-star gastro-inn with 14 rooms, and has had serious praise heaped on it since.

'Tatler' put it in its 101 best hotels list for 2012, calling it "a secret Tardis of coolness in the Cotswolds with bags of character".

Bedrooms are spacious with generous free-standing baths, Bang & Olufsen TVs, and free Wi-Fi.

There are crackling fires, cosy corners and a lovely treatment room in the garden for Swedish massage and facials.

Critics rave about the superb food and great breakfasts, which come with "the best devilled kidneys ever".

Kids will love the vintage Wendy House and dogs are welcome for an extra £10 (€12) per night.

Double rooms cost from £120pn (€138) during the festival.
