Getting there

Ryanair flies direct to Carcassonne from Dublin; Aer Lingus flies to Toulouse, an hour's drive away.

Where to stay

Special treat: A suit of armour guards the medieval walls of the four-star Hôtel Donjon (2 Rue du Comté Roger, 0033 468 112300, hotel-donjon.fr). One of few hotels inside the citadel, it is a three-minute stroll from the Basilica St Nazaire and the Château Comtal. Doubles from €135.

Mid-range: The Hôtel Les Trois Couronnes (2 Rue des Trois Couronnes, 0033 468 253610, hotel-destroiscouronnes.com) is good value and well placed for the best view in town of the fortress towers. Doubles from €90.

On a budget: Hôtel Central (27 Boulevard Jean Jaurès, 0033 468 250384, hotel-carcassonne-11.com) is close to the train station, and has simple rooms on the edge of the ville basse. Doubles from €60.
