Getting there

Paul travelled to Jesolo (below) with Topflight (1890 240 170; topflight.ie).

A week in the four-star Helios on Lido di Jesolo cost €719, including flights, transfers and half-board. Day trips to Venice (€52), Verona and Lake Garda (€51) can be arranged.

Aer Lingus (0818 365 000; aerlingus.com) flies direct to Venice and Verona from Dublin. For information on train journeys between Jesolo, Venice and Verona, see trenitalia.com.

When to go

The area is busiest in July and August, when average temperatures of 27-28°C are mediated by pleasant breezes. In September, the heat falls back and there's more room on the beach.

Venice is humid and packed in high summer, and connoisseurs prefer to visit in the winter and early spring, when the famous carnival gets underway.
